“Take It Off” is the hit single from The Donnas 2002 album Spend the Night. It managed to peak at number 19 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. It has also appeared on the Playstation 2 version of the guitar-strumming game Guitar Hero and as a download for the Xbox version of Guitar Hero II.

It’s also the subject of a video, like most hit singles, in which the girls are performing on a stage to a rather bored looking crowd - it looks like a music contest - until the band themselves gets on. The judges had previously bombed a number of bands but the girls manage to take home the gold and the trophy.

And for whatever reason, as they’re leaving, they toss the trophy to a group of guys who had actually been excited to see them play. Go figure.

Doubtless there have been plenty of rockers out there looking to strum along with The Donnas. Well, those rockers will finally get their chance - so long as they’re willing to pick up a plastic guitar and face their idols on a television screen.

Harmonix’s Rock Band 2, set to be released later this year, will feature a larger selection than the first game and is said to be sporting “New Kid in School” by The Donnas, their first contribution to the hit gaming title. Players will get the chance to strum, sing or drum their way through the song on a variety of difficulty levels.

And that’s not all. Rock Band 2 is also set to feature downloadable content. Given how popular some songs are, it’s quite likely that The Donnas will get at least one, if not more, of their other songs imported for play. And all downloaded games can be played on the first Rock Band, as well.

Rock on.

Given how sweet Marron 5’s songs are, who would imagine that one of their members would take such great delight in hiring strippers?

Yet apparently it’s true. Maroon 5 star Adam Levine admitted recently that, when touring with The Donnas, he hired a group of male strippers to embarrass the ladies of the group. The strippers came backstage dressed as police officers and apparently fooled the girls into panicking just a bit.

Then one of the men plugged in a stereo, they started dancing, and the moment was revealed for what it was: a hilariously awkward one. Pretty funny, Levine, though did The Donnas find it quite as funny?

Apparently Levine likes to play practical jokes all the time, so future tour partners, beware.

Though it wasn’t their first album to be released, Spend the Night by The Donnas has been their most successful to date, and was the first to jump onto the Billboard Hot 200.

Released in 2002, Spend the Night is best known for its hit single “Take It Off”, which managed to climb to number 19 on the Billboard Moden Rock Tracks at its peak. Both “take it Off” and another single from the album, “Who Invited You”, have been featured in video games (Guitar Hero and MVP Baseball 2003, respectively).

The album is notable in that it features another band, the Swedish-born Hellacopters, as background vocals.

Spend the Night features the following songs:

“It’s on the Rocks”

“Take it Off”

”Who Invited You”

Like the Olympics? Ever wished it had some better tracks backing it, though? So, apparently, did The Donnas. And perhaps that’s why they named their 2004 album Gold Medal.

As is standard with their music, Gold Medal is a collection of uplifting hard rock songs made to boost the ego of the girls and generally make people feel all right (while still feeling a trifle badass, of course). One of the album’s singles subsequently served as background music for coverage of the U.S. women’s snowboarding team in the 2004 Olympics.

Featuring such hits as Friends Like Mine, Don’t Break Me Down, Is That All You’ve Got For Me, It Takes One to Know One, Revolver, Have You No Pride and the aforementioned Fall Behind Me, Gold Medal is a must-have for any fan of rock and roll that follows more classic conventions.

Playlist for The Donna’s Gold Medal:

 1. I Don’t Want to Know (If You Don’t Want Me)
2. Friends Like Mine
3. Don’t Break Me Down
4. Fall Behind Me
5. Is That All You’ve Got For Me
6. It’s So Hard
7. The Gold Medal
8. Out of My Hands
9. It Takes One to Know One
10. Revolver
11. Have You No Pride

Did you keep abreast of American music in 2004? Then you probably remember a hit by the name of Gold Medal, released by rock band The Donnas. You might also remember one of the singles on that album, Fall Behind Me, which made it as a background song for the Nissan Xtera, not to mention the 2006 U.S. coverage of the Olympic Snowboarding Team.

Featuring a slightly bizarre and wholly retro music video of a unicorn in space (among other psychedelic imagery), Fall Behind Me is typical of The Donnas music in that it owes much to the rock music of the 80’s, right down to the strange and somewhat cheesy music video.

It’s a song of begging for mercy. It aggrandizes the girls against an unseen person to whom the song is addressed, saying that person has nothing on them. Humbling and slightly egotistical, but it’s a good song, so no problems there.

Lyrics for The Donna’s Fall Behind Me:

I can’t believe she bought it
She got too close and she caught it
Had a point, but she forgot it

When you skip steps on the way up
The gaps have a way of catchin up
And you can’t cover that with make-up

(CHORUS)X1

You’re gonna fall behind me
You’re gonna cry and beg for mercy
Cause you’re not ready and baby..
And you got nothin on me

Now that I’m getting to know her
Part of me want’s to show her
Who she’s really doing over

Cause she’s got nothin real
Taking everything she can steal
Just like it was her last meal (last meal last meal last meal…)

(CHORUS) X2

You’re gonna fall behind me
You’re gonna cry and beg for mercy
Cause you’re not ready and baby..
And you got nothin on me

You’re gonna fall behind me
You’re gonna cry and beg for mercy
Cause you’re not ready and baby..
And you got nothin on me

How long is she gonna be around
And how long do we have to watch her dummin’ down
Cause when its cheap it fades fast
And how long does she think its gonna last

(CHORUS)X2

You’re gonna fall behind me
You’re gonna cry and beg for mercy
Cause you’re not ready and baby..
And you got nothin on me

You’re gonna fall behind me
You’re gonna cry and beg for mercy
Cause you’re not ready and baby..
And you got nothin on me

And you got nothin on me (X4)

The Donnas have performed a fair amount of songs since their formation in 1993 as the Electrocutes. Originally a garage band, they’ve come a long way from their humble, self-taught beginnings and revealed their talent as a band to be awed by fans and feared by competitors.

Want proof? Just listen to The Donnas Dancing With Myself. Taking the classic Billy Idol song and infusing it with their own unique energy, The Donnas have created an identity all their own and claimed their own unique version of the song that would do Billy Idol proud (and probably did, since he’s still alive and kicking).

The song is simple; it glorifies the lack of need to have a partner. Who needs one to have fun at a party? All you need is a wild step and a sense for good cheer. The song fits in well with Mean Girls, as it played as the movie’s credits rolled.

Lyrics to Dancing With Myself:

In the walls of Tokyo
Down in London town’s a go-go
With the record selection
And the mirror’s reflection
I’m be dancing with myself

Oh, when there’s no one else in sight
In a crowded, lonely night
well I waited so long for my love vibration
And I’m dancing with myself

[Refrain]
Oh, oh, oh dancing with myself
Oh, oh, oh dancing with myself
When there’s nothing to lose
And there’s nothing to prove
well I’ll dancing with myself
Oh, oh, oh, oh

If I looked all over the world
And there’s every type of girl
But their empty eyes seem to pass me by
leave me dancing with myself

So let’s sink another drink
‘Cause it’ll give me time to think
If I had a chance, I’d ask the world to dance
And I’m dancing with myself

[Refrain]
Oh, oh, oh, oh [4x]

Well, if I looked all over the world
And there’s every type of girl
But their empty eyes seem to pass me by
And leave me dancing with myself

So let’s sink another drink
‘Cause it’ll give me time to think
If I had a chance, I’d ask world to dance
And I’ll be dancing with myself

{As refrain}
Oh, oh, oh dancing with myself
Oh, oh, oh dancing with myself
If I had a chance, I’d ask world to dance
If I had a chance, I’d ask world to dance
If I had a chance, I’d ask world to dance

Oh, oh, oh, oh [9x]
Yea sweat
An I sweat
An I sweat
An I sweat
An I sweat [x10]

Well, you can kind of manage it: but they’ll have to be on your stereo (unless you have a lot of money, but we won’t get into that here), and in the form of The Donnas, a hard rock band all about having fun in as loud a manner as possible.

Want a good example of their distinct sound (which draws from such role models as The Ramones and AC/DC)? Then check out Bitchin, released last year by the band’s own recording company. There’s plenty of good-natured rock songs to jump around to.

You could stick with Bitchin. Or you could try Wasted. Or Better off Dancing. Or Smoke You Out. Or maybe Girl Talk. Tonight’s Alright, perhaps? Or would you prefer the final act in When the Show is Over? Whichever one you go for you won’t be disappointed.
